Custom Home Builders in West Paso Robles & Adelaida
Custom homes, remodels, ADUs and guest houses on rural acreage west of Paso Robles, from a family general contractor based in town.
The short answer
Harrod Built builds custom homes, remodels, additions, ADUs and guest houses on the rural acreage west of Paso Robles, out Adelaida Road, Vineyard Drive and the canyons in between. Most of this land is unincorporated, so permits run through San Luis Obispo County, and a home usually depends on a well, a septic system and fire access. Call 805-712-8993 or contact us.

Building on the west side hills
Harrod Built is a family custom home builder and general contractor led by brothers Michael and Chris Harrod, based in Paso Robles. The west side is close to home, so we take on every size of job here: new custom homes, remodels, additions, ADUs and guest houses.
Rural lots out here come with their own checklist: the road in, the well, the septic, slopes and oaks, and the fire rules. We walk the land with you before you buy or design so those costs show up early.

Permits and site notes on west side acreage
County permits
Outside the Paso Robles city limits, building permits come from San Luis Obispo County Planning & Building, filed through the PermitSLO portal. Our SLO County permits guide explains the difference.
Water
Most homes out here run on a private well. Parts of the area are over the Paso Robles groundwater basin, which has its own County rules; see the Paso Robles Groundwater Basin program (we confirm per lot). Our well and septic guide covers testing and permits.
Septic
Septic systems are permitted under the County’s Local Agency Management Program (LAMP). Slope and soils decide the system type and where it can go.
Fire, roads and slopes
Much of the west side hill country is mapped as a fire hazard severity zone on the CAL FIRE Fire Hazard Severity Zone maps, which brings Chapter 7A construction and County Fire access and water storage rules. See our fire zone (Chapter 7A) guide and hillside lot guide.
Vineyard and ag land
If the parcel is under a Williamson Act contract, the County’s Williamson Act program sets what can be built (we confirm per lot).
Do you build on rural acreage west of Paso Robles?
Yes. Adelaida, Vineyard Drive and the west side canyons are a short drive from our Paso Robles office, and we take on custom homes, remodels, additions, ADUs and guest houses there.
Who issues building permits on Adelaida Road?
San Luis Obispo County Planning & Building, for land outside the Paso Robles city limits.
Do I need a well and septic to build out here?
Usually, yes. Most west side parcels have no public water or sewer, so the well and septic are designed and permitted with the home.
Can you look at a parcel before I buy it?
Yes, and it’s free. We walk it with you and talk through access, water, septic, slopes and the permit path.
What does a custom home cost on the west side?
It depends on the site and the design. Our Central Coast custom home cost guide explains what moves the number; a real figure comes from a site visit and a written estimate.
