Palo Alto

What a high-end home in Palo Alto really takes

Palo Alto lots are small for what they cost, so every square foot of a new home or whole-home remodel matters. New two-story homes go through the City’s individual review, protected trees are common, and many homes add a basement to get the space they need.

Harrod Built is a family-run, licensed general contractor (CSLB #986950). We build to your architect’s plans or design-build with our studio, and we price the work from the drawings early so the design stays within the budget you set.

Our office is in Paso Robles, and the finished homes shown on this site are in San Luis Obispo and Monterey counties. What we bring to Palo Alto is the same team, process and craftsmanship you see in those homes.

What to know before building in Palo Alto

Two-story review

New two-story homes and second-story additions go through review with the City of Palo Alto. We price the plans before you submit so the design stays on budget.

Basements

Basements add space without adding height. Shoring, waterproofing and dewatering are priced from the soils report.

Protected trees

Street and protected trees shape the footprint. Tree protection is part of our site plan from day one.

Small lots

Tight lots mean careful staging, deliveries and neighbor communication. We plan them before the job starts.

Contract type

Fixed price or cost-plus changes how risk and allowances work. See fixed price vs cost-plus.

Plans ready?

If you already have an approved plan set, send it over. We return a line-item bid you can compare to any other builder’s.

Areas we serve

Where we build in the Bay Area

Custom homes, whole-home remodels and additions on the Peninsula and in the South Bay, plus San Luis Obispo, Monterey and Santa Barbara counties.

FAQ

Common questions

Something else on your mind? Call Michael at 805.712.8993.

Can you work with my architect?

Yes. Most Palo Alto homes are drawn by an outside architect, and we price and build from those plans. We can also review drawings for cost before design review or the building permit.

Do you build teardown rebuilds in Palo Alto?

Yes. Teardown rebuilds and major remodels on existing lots are a large part of high-end work in Palo Alto.

How do you handle the distance from Paso Robles?

We plan reviews, inspections and subcontractor scheduling up front and staff the job for the drive.

How do we start?

Call or send the form with the address and a few notes. We start with a site visit and a review of any plans you have.
