Whole-home remodels

When the house needs more than a new kitchen

A whole-home remodel is closer to building a new house inside an old one. Walls move, kitchens and baths are rebuilt, electrical, plumbing and mechanical systems are replaced, and the house is brought up to current energy and safety rules. Often an addition or a second story comes with it.

Harrod Built is led by brothers Michael and Chris Harrod, from our office in Paso Robles. Our studio, Harrod Drafting & Design, can measure the existing house and draw the remodel, or we can build from your architect’s plans. Either way we price the work while it is being designed.

Inside the City of Paso Robles, remodels go through the city’s building review. On rural parcels outside city limits, the work runs through San Luis Obispo County Planning & Building, and adding bedrooms can mean septic review. We check which applies to your address first.

What shapes a whole-home remodel in Paso Robles

Remodel or rebuild

Past a certain point, rebuilding can make more sense. Our guide on whole-home remodeling vs new construction walks through how to decide.

Permits

Most whole-home remodels need permits for structural, electrical, plumbing and mechanical work. See do I need a permit to remodel in SLO County.

Clay soils

Additions on Paso Robles clay need foundations designed for it. See expansive clay soils.

Older homes

Homes built before 1978 can hide lead paint, asbestos and old wiring. Read remodeling an older home.

Budget

Our remodel cost guide explains what moves the number on a large remodel.

FAQ

Common questions

Something else on your mind? Call Michael at 805.712.8993.

Do you take on whole-home remodels or only new homes?

Both. Whole-home remodels, additions and second stories are a large part of our work alongside new custom homes.

Can we live in the house during the remodel?

On a whole-home remodel, usually not for the main phases. On phased projects we plan which parts of the house stay usable.

Do you remodel ranch and vineyard homes outside town?

Yes. Rural remodels often involve well and septic checks, and we plan those early.

How do we start?

Call or send the form with the address and what you want to change. We start with a walk through the house and a review of any plans or ideas.
