Monterey

Hills, history and the bay

Harrod Built is a family custom home builder led by brothers Michael and Chris Harrod. In Monterey we focus on new custom homes and larger projects, usually with an architect our clients already trust.

Nearby, we built the stone cottage in Carmel-by-the-Sea, and we’re building a custom home in the Santa Lucia Preserve now. Every Monterey County job is run by one of our project managers, or by Chris or Michael himself, with an update every week.

Building in Monterey

City design review

Inside city limits, new homes and larger changes go through the City of Monterey’s design review, and historic districts add their own rules. We work with your architect so the drawings are ready for it.

Coastal permits

Parts of Monterey sit in the Coastal Zone, which brings coastal permit rules into play alongside the city’s review.

Hillside lots and trees

Hillside lots bring soils reports, engineered foundations, retaining walls and drainage, and tree removal is regulated. We map slope and trees early.

Water and fire

Water is a real constraint across the Monterey Peninsula, so confirm your water situation before design gets far along. Wooded hillside parcels can also sit in mapped fire hazard severity zones, with ember-resistant construction under Chapter 7A of the California Building Code.

FAQ

Common questions

Something else on your mind? Call Michael at 805.712.8993.

Do you build in Monterey?

Yes. Monterey is part of our Monterey County service area, where we focus on new custom homes and larger projects.

What approvals does a new home in Monterey need?

Typically city design review and a building permit, a coastal permit in some areas, and extra review in historic districts. Water and trees are checked early.

Can you look at a lot before we buy it?

Yes, and it’s free. We’ll walk the property with you and talk through access, slope, water, septic and the likely permit path while you can still walk away.

Do you take on remodels here?

In Monterey County we focus on new custom homes and larger projects. Smaller remodels we keep closer to home in San Luis Obispo County.
